Have BMW pulled a master stroke with the new S1000 RR ?
Whilst nearly all the other manufacturers have sanitized and generally softened their power delivery in order to make their products easier to ride and more politically correct,BMW have firmly stuck their two fingers up at the mainstream manufacturers and produced a fire breathing thou.
Traditionally BMW have produced shall we say quirky and individual looking bikes with "before christ" designed power plants (recent IL4 excluded) all wrapped in a very germanic "lack of passion" style, until now.The S1000 RR is quite nicely styled (headlights excluded) with a wiff of 2009 ZX10 R about it,in a small, lightweight with good ergos, good gadgets especialy in the more expensive version and power and torque to crush all others. On one of the Fireblade sites that i go on the mood is frankly grim with the Americans in particular changing the rules of what a good litre bike should be to make the Blade look better(which i cant see that it is TBH).One of the members from Dubai dynoed (dynojet 250i)his standard 08 Blade at 157.15 RWBHP and then put his mates S 1000 RR and got 178 RWBHP in race mode and then 189RWBHP in what BMW call "slick mode"with gobs of torque everywhere(BTW,i know that different dynos on different days give different results). The power curve is more top endy (like a D16 RR) than the Blade but thats 30+ RWBHP more and if you compare that to the new R1,its even more impressive.
Now i know that its only BHP that i'm talking about but from what I gather the handling, brakes and weight are impresive too and all this with a 3 years warranty.
I think that for a lot of folks looking to upgrade to a newer IL4,with almost superstock power, fully accessorized with DTC,ABS ,quick shifter and alarm/immobilizer for £1310.00, will not have to look further than the S 1000 RR.
There hasn't been such a obvious choice of one in the hypersports IL4 1000 market for as long as i can remember.
Have BMW have stolen the show in 2010 ????
Its looking like it.

Frankly yes! I read a mag article the other day saying how good it was and how they would not have been surprised if the price had been circa £20k and not £11k that it is......

So BMW could be loosing GS sales to Ducati with the Multistrada,
But maybe more Ducati sportsbike sales could end up being BMW's gain.

I think that Henners tried one out but it would have been pretty dire/cold conditions so guess that he didn't give it the full berries but i can see no point in spending any more dosh in trying to catch up power wise as the cost would be prohibitive and The BMW has all this power with a road legal can too.I might have to try one out but bet that its not as complient and easy to ride as the Blade and if it is..............................................

Its great in every way, and even better if it stops Stu from waving the dyno results about. But for me its all about soul and belonging to a group of like minded people.
Not always just the good things but sometimes the bad also.
Would I put one in the Garage, oh yes.
would I miss looking at the Red Italian hell yes.
Sadly I dont have Henners bank balance so I will keep the Red one thanks.
Saying that I believe it is the bike of the year without doubt.

Have to agree Kev. Since owning my first Ducati I don't think there is another make I would crave for despite their performance. I do like the Aprilias and Guzzis though so at least its all Italian bikes with soul....

Same - here, haven't ordered one and won't be either. I have a BMW K1200s which is amazing but I know that when the sun shines and I want to just go out and have a wonderful experience (not just ride a bike) then the 996 will be the one that I'll take. There's something so right about a red Ducati

Yeh Stu, what Henners says
But if I must answer your question, the answer is YES.
So if you want to be on the best, most powerful, best handling IL4 machine buy BMW Sir.

The trouble is that there is no comparison from any other area pound for pound, horsepower for horsepower, gimmick for gimmick on a purely high volume sales sportsbike for the masses basis for this price
Oh and one more for you Kev with lots of love from Arthurbikemad.

Just back from No Limits Almeria. When we arrived to offload bikes from three artics on Sunday monring, BMW Germany had a customer test day going. €1800 for two days on road and two days on track all-in inc flights, accom, petrol and tyres and bike for 4 days (€2k max damage). Watched them for a while, a couple were going a decent pace and bike after bike changing gear with the boom of the quickshifter was a lovely sound, although they are quiet, so could do with an exhaust. Had a sit on one, they're tiny and very well made, very impressive bike. The green grows on you and you have to do a double take to not think it's a Suzuki. Reckon it will sell very well. Bit like their M3 or M5; not the fastest or prettiest, but often said to be the benchmark others aspire to.
I'd buy one

And think of the charts you could post up. its a no brainer.
I will be booking a test ride when it gets a wee bit warmer, just to see.

Stu,
the answer to your origonal is YES, BMW seems to have pulled the rug from under Honda etc with this little beauty. If I had a bucket full of free cash I would buy this rather than all the other il4`s except maybe the new MV........... |

The 1000cc IL4s are all great bikes and I enjoyed my MV until my back gave out but for soul it's still a vee twin IMHO. I've ridden V4s and triples and the V2 is still my favourite |
